The person who loves you
Is the person who still stands beside you when you have nothing
The person who remembers you even when the world forgets your name
When I was in secondary school there was this girl I loved
I loved her with the full chest of a young boy
I carried her matter like someone wey no get sense again
If I did not chat her it was problem
If I chatted her and she did not reply it was pain
I kept telling her I loved her
I kept giving her pure heart
But what did she give me
She only liked my messages with love stickers
Nothing more
Whenever she replied I became happy like a child seeing sun after rain
One day I said let me test something
Let me see if she will chat me first
Let me see if she will remember me without me disturbing her
My brother
She never asked how I was
She never checked on me
She never cared
I was like a goat tied to a tree still begging for attention
I remember when we were writing something in school
I asked her to help me write
She refused
She said she was busy
But that same girl was helping others
Not me
I could chat her and my message would stay long before she replied
Sometimes she replied others quickly
But when it came to me she would say she had nothing to say
Yet I continued
Because she used to say she missed me
And I believed it
But it was a lie
A clean lie
I loved her with everything
But I did not know the truth
I did not know that love without balance is heartbreak
I did not know that one sided love is slow poison
Why am I telling you this
Not to poison your heart
But to open your eyes
So you will not become like me
So you will not carry love that is not carrying you
So you will not die young because of feelings that do not have future
Do not pray to become like the boy I used to be
Do not love someone who does not love you back
Because it will drain you
It will break you
It will humble you in a painful way
This is my lesson to you
Use your heart with sense
Love but protect yourself
Give but watch if the person gives back
Care but notice when the person does not care
Learn from my story
So you will not bleed the way I bled.
